Beginning to plan:

Will more be merrier? Decide how many guests are appropriate, remembering that your child will be happier with a small party. A well-planned party, of modest size, is far more satisfying for everyone than a larger, less intimate event. Yes, we can handle large events, even events as large as 300 or more people. However, if a child is the guest of honor, it is too upsetting for most children to have more than a few close friends attend their party. For children under the age of ten, save larger parties for occasions where your child won't feel that he or she deserves a lot of attention.

Plan age appropriate food. Most children find attractive finger food to be more appealing than a complicated meal.

Plan age appropriate activities. Contact Ellen's Entertainment for activity planning advice.

Prepare a safe play area. Remove all breakables, coffee tables and other obstructions from the party area. You do not need a large room for a successful party. Most townhouses and apartments have adequate space for a good children’s party if a safe area is prepared especially for the occasion. You simply need enough room for your guests, both the adults and children, to be comfortable. A small, but mostly clear, space is often better than a large room, because the group is then easier to control. If you have hired entertainment, it will be easier to hear the entertainer speak in a small room even without amplification.

If you hire entertainment:

What toys should the children play with while the entertainer is there? Extra toys and noisemakers are not needed during the entertainer’s activities. Please put away all toys before the entertainer arrives. It is best to hand out party favors, noisemakers, etc. AFTER the entertainer has completed the planned activities. A good entertainer will bring plenty of activities and all necessary props, so extra items would be a distraction for the childr

What adult supervision is needed for children when an entertainer is present? Please encourage any adults present to be a good audience. If adults are present at a child's party, they should expect to supervise their children and be an active part of the audience with their children. Children under the age of four should have a parent helping them with the party activities at all times. Children ages 4 - 8 need somewhat less supervision than those under four but some adults should expect to be there to provide guidance, tie shoes, wipe noses, help the children if they need to find the toilet, and encourage the children to participate in party activities.  If the entertainer has to stop the program to help children with basic needs, then he or she won't be able to focus on providing the best possible entertainment for the children. Discipline and basic childcare should never be considered to be the function of an entertainer.

Be prepared for your entertainer’s arrival. Please provide a parking space for the entertainer and have payment ready when the entertainer arrives.  A good entertainer often brings a lot of accessories, so a nearby parking space is helpful and often mandatory. So that your entertainer may start to entertain your guests as soon as possible, please have your payment ready before your party begins. All payments must be complete before any activities will begin.

Should food be served during a performance? Normally, food should not be served during children's entertainment or activities. If you are hiring entertainment, check with the entertainer well in advance of the performance to see if it is appropriate to serve food during the entertainment. If the children are to participate in the entertainment, food is inappropriate and can possibly be dangerous during the activities.

Other Stuff: Please do not tell the children that the entertainer will be having cake and ice cream with them unless he/she has agreed to do so prior to the event. Although we adore the children (and the treats), we cannot possibly eat desserts every time we entertain. If you need for the entertainer to stay longer than the scheduled performance, the extra time must be requested and confirmed in advance. If additional time is needed for picture taking sessions with a costumed character, this must also be scheduled prior to the date of the party
